Wood Destroying Insects: What Idaho Homeowners Need to Know

A common Myth: "We don't have termites in Idaho because it's too cold."

Fact: We absolutely do have termites. Subterranean termites survive the cold winters by living deep underground (hence the name). But they aren't the only wood-eating threat in the Gem State.

1. Subterranean Termites

These specialized engineers live in the soil and build "mud tubes" to travel safely from the ground to the wood in your house. They need moisture and wood.

Signs we look for:

• Mud Tubes: Pencil-sized tunnels running up foundation walls.
• Damaged Wood: Wood that sounds hollow or looks like it has layers (they eat the soft spring wood and leave the grain).
• Swarmers: Winged termites that emerge in spring to start new colonies.

2. Carpenter Ants: The Mountain Menace

In Idaho's wooded areas (McCall, Sun Valley) and even in Boise's North End with its old trees, Carpenter Ants are often a bigger threat than termites.

Unlike termites, Carpenter Ants don't eat wood. They excavate it to build nests. They prefer moist, rotting wood but will move into sound wood once established.

Signs:

• Sawdust (Frass): Piles of fine wood shavings near walls or attics. (Termites eat the wood; ants leave the sawdust behind).
• Trailing ants: Large black ants seen inside, especially in winter.
• Faint rustling: You can sometimes hear them chewing in the walls!

3. Wood Boring Beetles

Powderpost beetles and Anobiid beetles can infest structural timbers, especially in humid crawlspaces. They leave tiny "shot holes" in the wood and fine, talcum-powder-like dust.

Conducive Conditions

A WDI (Wood Destroying Insect) inspection isn't just looking for bugs; it's looking for conditions that invite bugs:

• Earth-to-Wood Contact: Siding or trim touching the dirt.
• High Moisture: Leaking pipes or bad drainage.
• Firewood Piles: Stacked against the house (a free buffet invitation).
• Vegetation: Dense bushes touching the siding.

The WDI Report

For VA loans, a WDI inspection (NPMA-33 form) is mandatory. Even if not required, it's highly recommended for older homes or homes with wood siding.
