Winterizing Your Idaho Home: A Survival Guide

Idaho winters are beautiful, but they can be brutal on houses. A steep drop in temperature can burst pipes, and heavy snow loads can stress roofs. Preparation is better (and cheaper) than emergency repairs.

1. The Sprinkler Blowout (Crucial!)

This is the #1 mistake new Idahoans make. Our frost line goes deep. You must have your underground sprinkler system blown out with compressed air every October. Draining it isn't enough. If you skip this, your manifold and heads will shatter when the ground freezes.

2. Hose Bibbs and Hoses

• Disconnect all garden hoses. If you leave a hose attached, the water can't drain out of the faucet. It freezes and bursts the pipe inside your wall. You won't know until you turn it on in spring and boost your basement.
• Insulate bibbs: Use inexpensive foam covers for extra protection.

3. Prevent Ice Dams

Identify those beautiful icicles hanging from the roof? That's bad news. It means heat is escaping your attic, melting the snow on the roof, which runs down and freezes at the cold eaves, creating a dam. Water then backs up under the shingles and leaks into the house.

The Fix:

• Air Sealing: Seal gaps around attic lights and fans.
• Insulation: Ensure you have R-49 or better in the attic to keep the roof deck cold.
• Ventilation: Make sure soffit vents aren't blocked by insulation. The attic should be cold!

4. Heating System Tune-Up

Don't wait for the first 10-degree night to find out your furnace is dying.

• Change the filter.
• Test the system in September.
• Get a service call: Clean the flame sensor and check the heat exchanger for cracks (a carbon monoxide hazard).

5. Foundation Vents

• Crawlspaces: Close your foundation vents in late fall to keep plumbing pipes from freezing. (Don't forget to open them in spring to prevent mold!).
• Basements: Check windows for drafts.

6. Chimney Safety

If you burn wood, get your chimney swept. Creosote buildup causes chimney fires. Make sure the damper opens and closes properly.
